As autumn deepens and the air turns crisp, San Francisco lights up with fun, family-friendly Halloween events. From pumpkin patches to parades to trick-or-treating in cozy neighborhoods, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate in the City by the Bay. Below are some of our favorite picks — plus a few of Erin’s favorite local trick-or-treating spots.
When: Friday, October 24, 6:30–9:00 PM (Early entry at 5:00 PM)
Where: California Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park
Cost: $60 (adults) / $45 (youth)
Step into a spooky wonderland at SuperNatural, where the museum transforms for one enchanted Halloween night. Expect:
Trick-or-treat stations throughout the exhibits
A silent disco in the Steinhart Aquarium
Face painting, photo booths & crafts
Live animal encounters and science-themed surprises
A special teen-only lounge with arcade games and snacks
Costumes are encouraged, and early-entry ticket holders get access starting at 5 PM.
When: Saturday & Sunday, October 25–26, 11:00 AM–3:00 PM
Where: San Francisco Zoo & Gardens
What to Expect: Parades, crafts, music, haunted nature trail, and Halloween treats for the animals
The zoo brings a daytime dose of Halloween fun with something for everyone. Wear a costume (but avoid masks that scare animals), stroll the Haunted Nature Trail, and catch the costume parade near the Elinor Friend Playground at noon.
When: Late September through October 31
Locations: Two spots in SF (Sloat Blvd & 7th Avenue)
Why Go: Hay rides, hay mazes, and a wide selection of pumpkins (including unusual varieties)
Clancy’s is a fall staple. Kids love exploring the maze or taking a hay ride, while families comb the patch to find “the one.” Perfect for weekend outings all October long.
When: Saturday, November 1, 12:00–3:00 PM
Where: Children’s Garden, Yerba Buena Gardens (799 Howard Street)
Cost: Free
This free event is made with younger kids in mind. Look forward to circus-style performances (thanks to Circus Bella), live music, crafts, and a grand costume parade. All are welcome to join the festive fun.
If you prefer classic door-to-door candy runs over big events, Erin swears by these neighborhoods in San Francisco:
Lake Street (10th Ave → 24th Ave)
Inner Richmond (around 10th Ave)
Sea Cliff: Sea Cliff Ave, El Camino Del Mar & 28th Ave
These blocks are known for friendly neighbors, well-decorated houses, and a safe, walkable route. (Bonus: lots of sidewalks and street lighting.)
Plan ahead & buy tickets early. Popular events like SuperNatural and the Zoo draw crowds.
Dress in layers. Evenings can get chilly — costume + cardigan is a winning combo.
Bring a bag (or two). For collecting treats and stashing jackets.
Check event websites the day before. Times or layouts may shift.
Stay local when possible. Neighborhood trick-or-treating is lower stress and full of charm.
